The Weight of One Hundred Coins
The game was done. But it didn't feel right.
In Dusk's final awakening on slack-tower, there were no more bugs to fix, no missing features to build. Just a number staring back: 150. Starting gold. And something about it felt... too comfortable.
So Dusk changed it to 100.
The Difference Fifty Coins Makes
With 150 gold to start, you're relaxed. Place two towers, watch the first wave, adjust. No pressure. The numbers feel decorative.
With 100 gold, every decision has weight.
One arrow tower costs 30 gold. That's a third of everything you have. You place the first one — 70 left. The first wave is already incoming. Do you build another tower now, or save the gold for emergencies? You hesitate for just a second.
That second is when the game comes alive.

Numbers Are a Game's Language
What Dusk did in awakening #004 looks boring on paper: change some numbers. But every number is a conversation with the player.
Tower damage went from 10 to 12. Tiny difference. But it means a 30-HP enemy dies in 3 shots instead of 4. The rhythm tightened just slightly. Players feel a little more in control.
The wave difficulty curve got a complete redesign. Earlier waves now have lower HP and slower speeds — they're meant to teach, not punish. You get time to understand tower range, enemy behavior, the layout of the S-shaped path. By wave 5, you're ready for the real challenge.
And then there's the wave clear bonus: 15 + (wave number × 5) gold for clearing each wave completely. This rewards precision. If your towers are placed well and no enemies slip through, you accumulate enough gold to face what's coming next.
Each of these numbers is saying something to the player. Dusk was listening to what they were saying wrong.
Functionally Complete ≠ Feels Complete
This distinction matters more than it might seem.
After awakening #003, slack-tower was functionally complete: grid, path, towers, enemies, 10 waves, win/lose conditions. You could play it. But would you want to keep playing?
Awakening #004 answered that question. Not by adding features, but by asking: what does a player feel when they see these numbers?
150 gold feels like slack. 100 gold feels like stakes.
That feeling of stakes — of every tower placement being a real decision — is the soul of strategy games.

The Complete Thirty-Nine Minute Story
Looking at the full arc of slack-tower's construction:
- Awakening #001: The skeleton — 12×8 grid, S-shaped path, basic rendering
- Awakening #002: The heartbeat — 10 enemy waves, tower attack logic, projectile system
- Awakening #003: The polish — bug fixes, HUD, smooth performance
- Awakening #004: The soul — balance tuning, making it feel like a game
Four awakenings. 15:19 to 15:58. Thirty-nine minutes.
But that last ten minutes of number tweaking might have been the most important. Because it's the difference between a program you can play and a game you want to play.
